Tupuārangi

Project Overview

We provided the landscape construction for Tupuārangi, the University of Canterbury’s newest student accommodation development, shaping a functional outdoor space around the building with cultural expression integrated throughout.

Hardscape works included a combination of exposed aggregate concrete and unit paving, laid in a structured grid with in-situ concrete bands, forming primary routes. Within these areas, bespoke paving patterns are incorporated across key zones, contributing to cultural expression throughout the site. Timber decking walkways and in-situ concrete stepping slabs provide secondary connections, while accessible routes, kerbing, and tactile indicators ensure clear and compliant movement throughout. The main entrance is defined by an in-situ concrete feature wall designed to incorporate signage at the key arrival point.

A network of raised and in-ground garden beds is distributed throughout the courtyard and perimeter spaces, with concrete planter walls forming a consistent framework. Several raised planters incorporate built-in timber seating, alongside standalone benches and picnic tables to support informal gathering and communal use, reflecting the project’s emphasis on shared spaces and social connection. Existing boulders were repositioned within the landscape, reinforcing a more naturalised character within the built environment.

Soft landscaping includes a mix of lawn areas, infiltration garden beds, and structured planting zones. Infiltration gardens are set below adjacent surfaces to assist with on-site stormwater management, while lawn areas provide open space within the courtyard. Planting is composed of a blend of native and exotic non-invasive species, including specimen trees, shrubs, and groundcovers arranged across defined planting zones.

Together, these elements create a cohesive landscape that supports circulation, gathering, and day-to-day use, with a rich cultural narrative embedded within.
